Government wants network of “eco towns”
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has announced a new house-building boom which is set to create a string of “eco towns” across the UK.
The declaration came in Mr Brown’s first Queen’s Speech as PM. He also promised to “unblock the planning system” as the government strives to meet housing demand by building an additional 100 houses a day until 2020.
Mr Brown also warned those opposed to the development of eco towns that they would be “letting down” future generations by attempting to block plans.
This latest announcement of environmentally-friendly development actually goes further than previously expected, and will be the first new towns to be built since the 1960s.
A Home and Communities Agency will be created, with the purpose of providing affordable and social housing. Councils will also work closely with developers to meet the government’s targets for more affordable housing.
