Bill to reform planning process
The government has published a planning reform bill, which aims to simplify the planning process.
If the bill is approved, it will establish an independent infrastructure planning commission to oversee large projects. The planning commission will be able to fast-track large housing projects through the system, in an effort to improve housing stock.
It will also extend the number of domestic projects that do not require planning permission, including loft and kitchen extensions. This move could cut the number of planning applications by 90,000 a year, according to housing minister Yvette Cooper, relieving pressure on the system.
The government said the housing industry can expect clearer and faster decisions on infrastructure projects, which will aid economic growth as well as improving quality of life and helping to combat climate change.
