Tesco enters housing market

Tesco, the largest supermarket chain in the UK, is to expand into the housing market.

For a one-off fee of around £200, sellers will be able to have their homes listed on the Tesco website. They will also get Tesco-branded "for sale" signs to display outside their home.

Last year, rival supermarket chain Asda launched a pilot scheme in the north-east of England, where touch-screen terminals provided details of houses for sale.

Tesco’s move into the housing market has long been expected by estate agents, according to Henry Prior – founder of the property website Primemove.

He said: "Tesco’s arrival into the market has been anticipated for the last two years.

"This will be a private sellers’ website. People who sell a house will have a real alternative to instructing an estate agent."
